New AIDS Drug Floods SA

On 8 April 2013 in Ga-Rankuwa, Pretoria, the Health Department rolled out newer, cheaper 3 in 1 ARV drugs called Atroiza, which millions of HIV positive South Africans are now popping everyday.

A welcome convenience
Instead of taking three individual pills, (Fixed Drug Combnations) FDCs are a combination of all these drugs in a single pill called Atroiza that can be conveniently popped just once a day. Not only is Atroiza cheaper to purchase from the pharmaceutical companies licensed to distribute them, (Health Dept now pays R90 instead of R150 per patient) but they are actually the cheapest in the world. In addition to that, the medication is said to have far fewer side effects -- but more importantly reduces the risk of patients defaulting from treatment. Primary preference for the drug is given to HIV positive pregnant and breastfeeding women as well as newly diagnosed HIV or TB patients.

The drug dealers
The three pharma companies awarded the multi-billion Rand tender to supply the health department with the drugs are Aspen Pharmacare: a multi-national South African drug company which is also the biggest manufacturer in Africa,  Cipla Medpro: SA's third largest pharma and Mylan Pharmaceuticals from Pennsylvania, USA. A major manufacturer of generic drugs globally. Its this competition government and major opposition parties alike are attributing to the lower costs of the drugs.

Money, money, money
South Africa.Info says Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi says the deal saved the department more than R2billion. Not only are the drugs cheaper to purchase from the pharmaceutical companies licensed to distribute them, (Health Dept now pays R90 instead of R150 per patient) but they are actually the cheapest in the world.

Whats in the drug?
The FDC contains a potent cocktail of emtricitabine, efavirenz and tenofovir that is guaranteed to keep those HIV viruses subdued as long as you keep popping the pills.Paul Miller, Mylan CEO says "If the patients take their tablets at least 90% of the time, in other terms, not miss more than two or three tablets in a month, they will respond well to therapy. They will live longer as a healthy person."

Everybody wants a fix
Doctors Without Boarders says the drugs are good news for the 1.7million HIV pistive South Africans on ARV's, lobby group Treatment Action Campaign applauds the roll out while Health4Men HIV Clinic in Cape Town wants even more pills to be rolled out to avoid them going sold out.

Source: Sowetan Live

On the Sowetan Live, Zuluchick says: "I heard the current pills are thick as phuck, I wouldn't last on ARVs." S.Cold says, "Eish I hate taking these cocktails, at least now I'll have less loads. Easier to hide from my talkative friends," while Dithabs says its all good. "Good news indeed! Even the cocktail is okay as long as it doesn’t make you sick. I take three pills a day, hakuna mathata! I am okay with the whole treatment."

No group has protested or warned against any possible dangers the new drugs could bring.

PHOTOGRAPHED! ALIEN UFO CLOUD SHIPS IN PORT ELIZABETH, SOUTH AFRICA

“Oh my god, UFO’s!”  I blurted out from the back of a cramped Port Elizabeth bound mini-bus taxi.  None of the passengers in the overloaded taxi even bothered to look at the disc shaped objects I was pointing at, which were hovering in the sky like large, white frisbees. I turned to the only person in the taxi, probably the world, who bothers listening to any of my extra-terrestrial theories. She was half asleep, resting her head on the seat in front of us; “Zen look, flying saucers.” I exclaimed while nudging her with my elbow. “What? Stop lying,” she murmured without lifting her head.  I turned to look out the windows on the right side of the taxi, and was startled when I saw another flying saucer hovering a few hundred meters above the ground. PE was being invaded by aliens!

I spotted a flying saucer disguised as a cloud while entering the coastal city of Port Elizabeth
At this point, I was so freaked out that my hands were trembling as I pulled out my camera phone from my pocket. I took a pic, but my hands were shaking so much it came out fuzzy. Damnit! I deleted it and tried again, steadying my hands this time, and got a perfect shot. “Those aren’t spaceships, they’re just clouds,” said Zen as she lazily lifted her head. “No, they are CLOUD SHIPS. UFO’s disguised as clouds,” I explained. She rolled her eyes, doing that whatever dude look whenever I act weird, then dropped her head back on the seat.  I took a second picture of the UFO clouds just before they went out of view, and fortunately this picture was as clear as the last. A smug grin emerged on my face while scrolling through the pictures. I finally got it. I thought to myself. Evidence of extra-terrestrials, even though nobody else could see them.

Grabbed my camera phone and snapped these pics of the flying saucer shaped clouds. Notice how distinct they are from the other shapeless clouds

WTF are cloud ships?!
Getting weirded out? Extra-terrestrial species such as the Pleiadians cloak their spacecraft’s, called starships, to prevent them from being seen by people in the third dimension (basically us). These starships can change the colour of their ‘skin’ to match the colour of the sky thus becoming invisible. (Think of how chameleons change colours to hide). The starships can also collect the water molecules from the air and use them to form a cloud that surrounds the ship, hence the term ‘cloud ship.’ With this technology, cloud ships can safely hover above a large city like Port Elizabeth undetected, while appearing as normal clouds to the laypeople going about their daily business on the ground below.
Weird cloud formations over Mt.Shasta in America.
"Dude WTF?!" A skier  in  Mauna Kea, Hawaii looking at a flying saucer cloud.
Ya’ll are probably thinking that I have my head in the clouds so to speak. But one only has to watch movies like The Avengers, V or Signs to understand how entire UFO fleets can cloak themselves while we remain totally oblivious to their presence. So if these strange looking clouds are actually alien starships, what on Earth are they doing here and why are they doing it?
Invisibility shield lifting off a cloud-ship in Mauna Loa, Hawaii.
Cloud ships here to protect us
In most Hollywood blockbusters, UFO’s hovering in the sky usually deploy devastating weapons on the puny humans below, sending us scattering like cockroaches in the light. On the contrary, cloud ships aren’t the threat to us; it’s actually the world leaders. Our world leaders are deploying extremely poisonous chemicals in the sky called chem-trails for evil, clandestine purposes. These chemicals give us cancer, dumb us down, poison our water supply and do a whole bunch of other nasty things which would make you want to grab a pitch fork and lynch someone in the White House if I went into detail. And it’s no conspiracy theory, ever seen high flying airplanes spraying white chemicals that form long, straight streaks in the sky which stay there for hours? Well, those are chem-trails, but some people believe cloud ships are here to neutralize these chem-trails before they do any harm to the humans on terra-firma.
"Cases of flu and other illnesses were supposedly spiking in those areas that had been chemtrailed."
I believe the politically correct way of saying chem-trail is 'persistent contrail' We're fucked!
Apparently, this really pisses of the “dark ones” because cloud ships  aren’t only invisible to our eyes, but are also undetectable by radar, even with the advanced radar technology donated to the dark ones by their apparent “off world overlords.”  So when an airplane sprays a chem-trail and it evaporates immediately,  or you see large, oddly shaped cloud gobbling up the trail behind it, yep that cloud is a starship piloted by benevolent ET’s who are apparently here to guide humanity into our next step of evolution. But are cloud ships really camouflaged alien starships? Or is there a clear, scientific explanation to this UFO cloud ship phenomenon? Well, it turns out there is.

Lenticular clouds, not UFOs
There are very rare but interesting cloud formations called lenticular clouds which form at high altitude. How these lenticular clouds form is a bit complicated,  but to be as simple as possible; lenticular clouds, also known as wave clouds, form when moist air moving in wave motions passes over a mountain range and is heated adiabatically (without transference of heat energy) as it drops. A constant wind may produce flat, disc shaped clouds which remain stable and slow moving for hours, often drifting many kilometers from the mountains which formed them. They get their name from their peculiar lens shape. Look, I’m no meteorologist so you can go to www.thelivingmoon.com to get a fancy explanation.

You know, this explanation makes perfect sense because 1, PE is known as the ‘Windy City’, meaning the clouds had an abundance of wind to form and 2. Even though there weren't any mountain ranges where we driving, the clouds could have drifted from the mountain ranges in the Tstitsikama or Garden Route region a few hours’ drive from our location.

‘Lennies’ are famous for giving UFO hunters solid boners because of their flying saucer like resemblance, and one can only imagine what percentage of UFO cloud ship sightings appearing on the net are just good ol’ lennies. I’m sorry if this disappoints UFO enthusiasts, but what I saw were probably just naturally formed lenticular clouds. Or were they?

UFOs/lenticular clouds drawn by ancient artists
In ancient Hindu texts thousands of years old, extra-terrestrials (who were mistaken as gods), are said to have traveled in flying machines called Vimanas which could cloak themselves and become invisible, or even disguise themselves as clouds!  In the bible, Koran and Torah, there are plenty stories of mysterious clouds guiding chosen prophets. Remember the cloud that guided Moses in the desert even at night? (Exodus 13:21 And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of a CLOUD, to lead them the way, and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light…)

"The Madonna with Saint Giovaninno" painted in 14th century Italy. I never seen a glowing cloud with portholes . So to did that man & his dog it seems.
The ancients from Sumer, (modern day Iraq) referred to extra-terrestrials as the Annunaki. Interestingly, Sumer is where these Annunaki aliens landed and it was also called Ki.En.Gir meaning land of the lord of the blazing rockets. Just by looking at modern rockets, we know their powerful engines eject bellows of smoke as they take off. Plus, rockets leave a long trail of smoke as they shoot into space. Could primitive people, who couldn't understand what they were seeing, have mistaken the smoke from Annunaki rockets as clouds, just like we still don’t understand cloud ships today?

"The Annunciation with Saint Emidius" 1486. A lenticular cloud or UFO is shining a laser onto Mary's crown chakra. Could the beam of light symbolize telepathic communication?
There are also numerous paintings painted around the medieval era in Europe which show what appear to be flying saucers emerging from guess what? Lenticular clouds. So it’s either people from long ago watched way too many episodes of V, or they recorded their sightings to make their descendants aware of “The Watchers.”
Go figure.
So what did I see?
Chances are, what I saw while we were on holiday in PE during the 2012 festive season was just a natural occurrence. Maybe that’s why the Xhosa’s in the taxi ignored me. Hell, they were probably dissing me and calling me crazy in between those clicks they make. It makes sense; everyone down there is used to seeing lenticular clouds, just as much as meteorologists at the PE weather bureau #ROTFL whenever a hysterical tourist from Gauteng calls in claiming that lennies are UFO’s.

On the other hand, an intelligent race of extra-terrestrials would want to take advantage of the extra camouflage provided by naturally occurring clouds, and the re-assurance that humans would easily dismiss their cloud ships as lenticular clouds, especially if that area has an abundance of clouds like this. They hid in the clouds in ancient times, why can’t they do it now?

One thing is for sure though, I definitely saw flying saucers. Were these flying saucers alien or natural? That’s open for debate; the extra-terrestrials and I will let you decide.

3,2,1 BUNGEE!

This is to certify that Mooketsi Nthite has just jumped the world’s highest bungee jump bridge, Bloukrans at 216m. As I type this piece, I’m looking at the certificate proving that I have about half a brain in my skull, because no sane person with a healthy medulla oblongata would risk becoming a red splat on the ground just to have the bragging rights to say 'I did it.'

I still get dizzy just watching this

One thing I’ve always had on my To Do list before I die is to bungee jump. The exhilaration that comes from jumping of a high ledge with nothing but a flimsy rope saving you from a spectacular death sends a cold shiver of excitement down my spine.   So when Zen dared me to jump while we were on vay-kay in the Eastern Cape, I didn’t hesitate to call her bluff, oh boy if only I knew what I was getting myself into.

Getting strapped up for my virgin jump
She kept hammering, “Bloukrans, lets jump of the Bloukrans Bridge.” All I did was roll my eyes and mumble, “ok Zen we can do it.” The full magnitude of what she got me into only hit me when I saw the actual bridge we would be jumping off on December 30 2012. Firstly, the structure itself is a breath taking engineering marvel, dozens of vertical concrete slabs connected to a massive arch holding up the highway linking the Western Cape to the Eastern Cape.

While motorists travelling on this highway appreciated the tranquil beauty of the Tsitsikamma National Park from the safety and comfort of their vehicles, a few meters below daredevils were quite literally stepping out of their comfort zones.  From the viewing decks, which are a few hundred meters away, we could even hear the jumpers screaming as they got pushed of the bridge and plummeted towards Earth like suicidal stock brokers jumping of the roof of the JSE, but fortunately this fall was stopped halfway by the highly flexible rope.

A lump formed in my throat, and I took a deep gulp as I reconsidered my decision. “Zen, maybe we should jump at Chaf Pozi in Soweto for starters, I mean its only 100m of the ground,” I softly muttered. “Why, are you scared?” She teased. “Ofcourse not, what I’m trying to say is…” Before I could finish my sentence she handed me a disclaimer to sign. It might as well have been my suicide note.

The day of the jump arrived, and as our group was lead through a stony path leading to an even narrower catwalk under the bridge which connected with the bungee jump deck, the two Peroni’s I had gulped down earlier did little to calm my nervous nerves. Then I looked down through the black, steel mesh floor we were walking on, only a few centimetres thin, and I became immediately sober.  Below us, far below us, was the Bloukrans River snaking through the Tsitsikamma Forest. We were hundreds of meters above ground, and there was no safety net to catch us should the rope give. The thought of it made me dizzy

Then we were on the jumping deck where the bungee crew was scurrying about like sailors on a ship deck. There was rope pulling everywhere, one group was throwing ropes over one side of the bridge while a jumper leapt over the opposite side. Other crewmen were tying ropes around jumpers’ heels and securing safety straps around their torso’s,  while others were doing the exact opposite;  untying the ropes and straps of the jumpers pulled safely back up.

'Spiderman' coming to my rescue, lol.

Another group was operating a winching device that pulled and lowered ‘Spiderman’ up and down the bridge . (Spiderman is the guy who descends on a separate line and helps you back up after you jump). And as soon as Spiderman brought a jumper safely back up, another jumper was already prepped and waiting on the launch pad for the go ahead to bungee, this cycle was repeated over and over again, flawlessly with each jumper.

All this was done without the control of a captain or visible supervisors barking out orders. Instead, the crew was working to the rhythm of fast paced techno music, blaring so loud we couldn’t hear the screaming jumpers even though they were just a few meters away. After seeing the co-operation, synchronicity and “safety first” attitude exuded by the bungee crew, our group automatically developed a faith in their skills.  I felt safe knowing we were in the hands of people who, through clear demonstration, knew exactly what they were doing.

Zen jumped before me and several jumps later it was my turn. Now my heart was pounding louder than the Crazy White Boy joint the DJ was jamming. They strapped me up, tied my legs and lead me to the edge of the deck like pirates making a prisoner walk the plank.

I took one peak down, shook my head and shouted repeatedly “Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!” Every cell in me was begging me to abort, but it was too late to turn back now. The two guys flanking me began the countdown, “3! 2! 1!” then shoved me of the bridge, sending me screeching towards terra firma at want felt like Mach speeds.

It’s like I was plunging into a wormhole, a spiralling time warp where inertia and gravity would pull me down into a black hole for infinity. Then I felt a strong jerk, pulling me back up, repelling gravity like the same sides of a magnate. I snapped out of the trance, the whiplash klapped me back into real time reality. Though the initial descent lasted a mere 5.5 seconds, it was the most exhilarating and longest five seconds of my life. But the fun wasn’t over; gravity wasn’t going to give up without a fight…

Most people think bungee jumping is a once of deal between gravity and the thick rope defying it to save your life. Remember, after the rope is stretched to its full length and retracts back up, recoiling like a cobra, it relaxes again only to provide you with yet more momentum for another scary descent.

This ‘second descent’ took half the time as the first jump, but it was more terrifying because my eyes were open wider than the Kimberly Hole.  At the point where the rope retracts after straightening out,  I came close enough to the ground to make out the individual stones and pebbles on the banks of the Bloukrans River, but fortunately not too close to feel them with my face.

The third round of my battle against gravity was the most intense. With my heart booming in my rib cage, lungs heaving my chest up and down like a rumbling volcano ready to explode; my senses were more alert than they’ve ever been. My sight especially was sharper than an eagle’s; I could see each individual branch, each little leave of every tree swaying in the forest canopies.  I never felt so alive…

I didn’t really feel the rope jerking me up for the fourth time, or any other time after that. To be honest I was just terrified the rope would snap or the Velcro strap around my heels would tear. Though I was frightened of dying, I was having intense fun simultaneously.

The total time from jumping of the bridge, to bobbing up and down like a buoy in the ocean, to finally hanging still, suspended upside down in mid-air like an astronaut in zero-gravity, takes less than two minutes. But the sense of pride and bravery you walk away with lasts a life time.
Thanks to the crews excellent skills, I survived. Matter fact, as far as I know Bloukrans has a clean record. Way to go mense, awe!

I felt extremely relieved when Spiderman came down to ‘save’ me, but also disappointed because I wished I could have had a few extra minutes to prolong the exhilarating experience of defying the force Isaac Newton named gravity and living to tell about it.

When we were back on solid ground, before the adrenalin in my blood stream had even dissipated, Zen was already daring me to do another dare devil stunt. She shoved a pamphlet in my face showing people jumping out of an airplane, “Let’s do skydiving next time.” My response was the same as when she first dared me to bungee, “let’s do it!”

Red Bull Beat Battle 2012

Eight dance crews, 1 winner, R100 000. Stakes were high at one of SA’s biggest dance competitions, the Red Bull Beat Battles (RBBB) held in Bassline, Newtown , Johannesburg on May 26 2012. Last year’s winners Artistic Intelligence (AI) fought frantically to maintain their title, but challengers wanted nothing less than AI’s heads served on a silver platter. The 1 100 bloodthirsty crowd were baying for slaughter and to their delight, many heads rolled.

Debuting last year, RBBB are newbies to the dance scene.  However, true to the energy drinks style of plowing monster (small letter m) budgets and fierce marketing campaigns into events, plus the R100k grand prize for the winners, RBBB became a house hold name virtually overnight. In a year, RBBB have muscled their way onto the podium as one of the top three competitions in SA, alongside Strictly Hip Hop and Masters of Rhythm.

Unlike the glory days in the nineties and early 2000's when it was a huge crowd puller, seeing Basseline packed to capacity is a rarity this decade, and the owners have to attract events like this if they are to retain Basseline’s reputation as one of Joburg’s coolest night life pozi’s.  I had to wriggle, shove and even stand on my toes to get a lekker view of the action on stage, and I am a pretty tall guy BTW, which goes to show competition for the best seats was as hectic as the dance battles themselves. A giant big screen was erected outside the club for those unfortunate souls who couldn’t make it inside the packed venue, ag shame man.

Yoh the stage looked hectically futuristic. Red Bull really went all out to give spectators a blow you away sort of experience that night. Legendary DJ Switch,  was in the DJ cockpit which was encircled by high-res digital monitors #dope. The giant LCD decks were cleverly assembled to resemble tall buildings in a big city skyline at night, too ill. Hypnotic high-tech lighting projected green strobe lights which created a beautiful, artificial aurora borealis like effect. As we became entranced by the kaleidoscope of colours, the Red Bull logos hanging on the walls seemed to emit an ominous glow. I swear there’s something occultish about those two bulls; the horns, hooves, tail #justsaying. Suffice to say; the groovy light show and overdose of Red Bull’s had everyone’s eyes more alert than a Spanish bull fighter. And with so many dilated pupils transfixed on the stage, the slightest misstep would be easily spotted by spectators, let alone the strict judges.

Crews represented a myriad of dance styles including uniquely South African genres like iSbhujwa and pantsula. As well as international genres like breakdancing, krump and this weird style called Vogue by the cross dressing crew Vintage.  Ashwin, co-founder of Vintage , says his grossly flamboyant, cross dressing crew’s unique dance style Vogue “partly originates from the poses on hieroglyphic figures…”He adds, “It’s basically a set of perfectly aligned angled poses.”

‘Mo’ from Afro Tribe which participated last year explains that, “Pantsula is the mother of all township cultures. Sbhujwa  comes from French word bourgeoisie, meaning upper class, because mabhujwa place ourselves higher than pantsulas.”
En battle, pantsulas did the clichéd footwork. Sbhujwa crew Soulistic Fusion showed Real Action Juniors why pantsulas and mabhujwa aren’t equal. If Red Bull does give you wings, Ninja Turtles would be good candidates for their next commercial.  They really clobbered Hlaks with their somersaulting antics, as in a proper bliksem, and so the mapantsula crews’ heads rolled first.
Ninja Turtles poes klapped the only all-girl crew Phly Nation out the competition.

When mc AKA announced Phly Nation had their wings clipped, one of its members collapsed, clutched her ankle and writhed on the floor in unbearable pain from an apparent injury.  “She thinks this is a drama theatre,” remarked someone in the crowd, several chuckles approved his statement.
With four crews decapitated, things started heating up in the semi-finals with battles between AI v Vintage and Ninja Turtles v Reptilez. Artistic Intelligence got raped by a tutu wearing gang (LMFBAO) and Reptilez shoved Ninja Turtles back into the sewers.
The final duel, Vintage v Reptilez was a clash of two different styles. Reptilez had clean pop-locking transitions, whereas Vintage’s flailing limbs appeared disorganised compared to Reptilez who moved cohesively. Vintage eventually succumbed to Reptilez’s potent venom. The Soweto serpents were crowned champions and hugged the trophy tighter than a pythons embrace.
RBBB are here to dominate. As for aspiring crews gunning for the championship, prepare for the 2013 qualifiers. And if you are wise I’d suggest you bump Wu Tang’s track Protect ‘Ya Neck and heed the Wu’s advice, because plenty more heads will definitely roll at next years battles. Check out my interview with the reptilians in the clip below.

Str.Crd 2012

We all know South Africa has 11 official languages, therefore 11 official cultures right? But what makes up a culture? Is it traditional clothing, dialect or a certain heritage whose lineage can be traced back? Well, if that’s the case there is one culture that’s been ignored for far too long in SA, it is a culture that’s infecting city youth like an airborne disease, a culture that has become a way of life for many. I’m talking about urban culture, and last week Jozi’s streets quaked under stomping sneakers as armies of local and international urbanites, came marching in for the biggest street festival in the country…

…Str.Crd (pronounced Street Cred) is an annual street festival mashing the latest in urban fashion and popular culture in contemporary SA. It originally kicked off at Cape Town Station in 2010 but was moved to Joburg’s artsy Maboneng Precinct this year.  But unlike the Mother City, the Jozi version rocked for four days, kicking off from the 27th of September to the 30th, literally shutting down several blocks.

However, this was more than just another jol in downtown Jozi. Str.Crd 2012 was a creative potjiekos, a frothy stew brewing with sneakers, graffiti, music, skateboarding and fashion. And as this irresistible aroma wafted in the air, it attracted thousands of highly artistic revellers from far and wide like excited bloodhounds closing in on a fresh scent.

HGH.STR, the fashion section had really cool kicks from brands such as Nike and Adidas, the retro Onitsuka Tiger (the yellow sneakers Bruce Lee wore in Enter The Dragon) as well as Brazilian Mutta Shoes. Surprisingly, some females couldn’t get their paws of the Bitches Must Know T-shirts. Str.Sessions allowed international and local artists to exchange creative concepts, while Str.Music introduced international artists like American Jesse Boykins III and Just A Band from Kenya, but undoubtedly the best performers came from  local acts PH Fat, and Zaki Ibrahim to name a few. Other categories were Str.Dance, Str.Skate, Str.Sneakers and Str.Bball, better known as Nike Street Kings, basketball matches between teams of local celebrities.

After this year’s epic Str.Crd, it is clear that SA could be embracing urban as an official culture. Could it be why the organisers held it during Heritage Month this year?  I mean just like the 11 official cultures, urban has its own traditional clothing, music and even writing and language in the form of graffiti and tsotsi-taal. In the future, Str.Crd could be more than just a giant art exhibition, it could be the historic event where urban culture becomes officially recognised as part of SA’s heritage, as our 12th official culture, maybe that day will come at Str.Crd 2013, who knows?

Cool Ink 2012 JHB Tattoo Expo

Ever tried getting tattooed but cringed at the thought of telling your conservative friends and family? SA is increasingly becoming more and more liberal every year, since #YOLO what better way of expressing your liberal beliefs than by getting a cool tattoo right? Having been discovered frozen in snow, even the oldest tattooed corpse ever found, 5 000 year old Otzi from Austria is literally ‘cool.’ Reality shows like Ink Masters show talented American tattooists, but is SA tattooing cooler? I was at the annual, three day, Cool Ink 2012 JHB Tattoo Expo. Wow, was it cool indeed.

Tattooing is an exotic art practiced since ancient history. The word has Pacific derivations, ‘Ta’ is Polynesian meaning ‘to strike something’ and ‘Tatau’ is Tahitan for ‘to mark something.’  Warrior tribes like the Maori of New Zealand wore facial tattoos called ‘moko’ to scare enemies.

Despite this rich history, most South Africans have negative perceptions towards tattoos, seeing them as the reserve for tacky people. Fortunately, thanks to expos like Cool Ink, contemporary attitudes are changing rapidly. “Pre-94 people considered tattoos taboo,” says Royston Chapman, who founded Cool Ink three years ago with wife Karen.  “Nowadays respectable people like doctors and lawyers get inked.”
One myth Roy cleared is that HIV/AIDS is contractible from tattoo needles. “HIV/AIDS virus can be transferred via intravenous needles, not through tattoo needles because it can’t survive in open air.” Our eyes locked, “but you can get Hepatitis so make sure the artist opens the needle in front of you.”

Like most people here, Roy is completely covered in tattoos. There is a tribal marking on his left temple and a design on his shiny, bald head. A slight shudder runs down my spine as I wonder if Roy could be a ‘skin-head.’ Heavily tattooed, brutal Neo-Nazi’s who dragged people behind bakkies. “Definitely not,” He assured. His piercing blue eyes felt like they were staring into my soul. “My first tattoo was of my girlfriend’s initials and not a Swastika.” We chuckled, and during that moment I caught a sparkle in his eye hinting on a gentler side well camouflaged by this ink coated, tough exterior.

Jordan Nel from Little Shop of Horrors warns teens not to tattoo over pimples. “Don’t ink over zits or broken skin, only tattoo healthy skin.” Brandon Peterson from Back to Basics Tattoos and Piercings gives pointers for getting your first tattoo, “Research on the artist. A credible tattooist always asks for consent forms for under 18’s.” He paused, looking up at me with a smirk, “don’t forget to conceal the tattoos with your school blazer like I did,” and continued adorning his living canvas.

Cool Ink 2012 definitely showcases a lot of local talent. Interested? Roy says all you need is a good art background to start your shop, no tertiary or matric qualifications needed. Who knows? Maybe in the future, archaeologists will be excavating your parlour like Otzi’s remains. But maybe a more realistic goal would be beginning with a stand at Cool Ink 2013.
